New alfalfa varieties are released each year, and producers hear lots of sales pitches for them. But growers are provided with little information to help them decide which varieties to choose, such as yield comparisons from an independent source that are randomized and replicated. This problem is experienced by growers in Washington State and is a high priority for research for the Washington State Hay Growers Association (WSHGA). The purpose of these alfalfa variety trials is to assist producers in selecting varieties for irrigated alfalfa to improve yield, quality, and economic viability.
