Selenium deficiency in Northwest sheep, dairy and beef cattle damages muscle tissue (myopathy), affecting skeletal or heart muscles. It is most common in newborn lambs or calves, but can also result in chronic health problems and retained fetal membranes in older animals. Affected animals may die from sudden heart failure, may show signs of respiratory distress, or may have difficulty walking, rising or nursing. This publication discusses the effects and detection of selenium deficiency, and methods of safely supplementing selenium-deficient diets. Note: although a lack of selenium causes problems, an excess of selenium is toxic. 4 pages.
