Abstract

Low levels of nitrates occur naturally in groundwater. Additional nitrates from fertilizer and low levels of pesticides may leach from the crop's root zone into groundwater. Infants under 6 months and ruminants (cattle and sheep) are affected by nitrate in drinking water. US-EPA has set MCL (maximum contaminant levels) for pesticides. Key words: hemoglobin, methemoglobinemia, nitrite, fumigant. 4 pages.
