Replicating Biderbost Baskets with Ed Carriere

Abstract
Though I have worked with Ed Carriere, Suquamish Elder and Master Basketmaker and Canoe Carver, since 2004 when he visited our Squaxin wet archaeological site to help excavate ancient, ~600 year old, clam baskets and teach our students, this report chronicles our beginning to work together replicating and analyzing the 2,000 year old Biderbost wet site basketry and cordage at the University of Washington Burke Museum. With dated entries, I document our work together, including (1) applying for grants to help, (2) first visiting the UW Burke (11-17-2014) with images of us working with Laura Phillips, Archaeology Collections Manager, and Dr. Sven Haakanson, Collection Manager of Ethnology (who showed us the ancient cradle found in the Nooksack region), (3) Ed forming the twill 3/3 base for his fine, open-twined Biderbost pack basket replica, (4) Ed instructing Dale on his checker-work Biderbost replica, (5) Ed reporting finishing his open-twined sides up to reinforcement area of his replica on a trip, (6) demonstrating our work at the January 10, 2015 UW Burke Archaeology Day, (7) images of Dale's replicated checker-work, split cedar root, Biderbost 2,000 year old pack basket style.
