Abstract
The Basketmaker II and Basketmaker III occupations of Cedar Mesa have been treated as single phases: the much more extensive Pueblo II/III occupation, however, has been divided into four subphases based on the seriation described in this chapter. The information available did not make it possible to divide the earlier occupations, nor were there compelling reasons to do so.
For the Pueblo period, we wished to test some ideas about development within the CU 150-200 year span (Lipe and Matson 1971; Matson and Lipe 1977) and the amount of material was such that even after subdivision, samples of a workable size remained .. Furthermore, the short-lived Pueblo pottery styles provided the means to subdivide the occupation. This section is a description of the methodologies used to develop a temporal order, the results obtained and. the ways in which the results were checked.
